About Mallorca Match
Our story
Behind Mallorca Match are Katharina and her husband. This is our story — written down so you don’t have to repeat our detours.
Seven months in Portugal, a campervan, and a pattern
We had been thinking about leaving Germany for a long time — and spent years looking at regions. We lived in Portugal for seven months; we came within a hair of staying in a small village on the Atlantic coast, because we loved the quiet there so much.
And before that, in the campervan, we kept falling into the same pattern: you arrive in a holiday town, there are one or two lovely cafés, and you find exactly what you don’t have at home — peace and quiet, or nightlife. On the high of two precious holiday weeks, the thought comes quickly: “How wonderful it would be to live here forever.”
Two months in Portixol — and a quick signature
At some point, friends offered to let us spend two months in their apartment in Mallorca — in a neighbourhood of Palma we would never have had on our radar: Portixol. Within those two months we fell so hard for the area and its micro-infrastructure between Portixol and Es Molinar that we signed a permanent lease there right afterwards.
The rose-tinted glasses
The liveliness of the neighbourhood, the closeness of the sea, the high share of local residents — all of it captivated us so much at first that we barely noticed what was also there: a soundtrack of noise outside the front door with beautiful regularity, the kind that can wear you down after a few weeks. Building sites all around — to this day, currently a full gut renovation right next door. Paper-thin walls in a charmingly rented old building, and above us, most likely, an Airbnb.
With imagination and a knack for furnishing, the flat became genuinely cosy. But the external factors cannot be argued away — and they are exactly what you don’t see in two holiday weeks.
The realisation
Many emigrants have confirmed this exact arc to us in personal conversations: you fall for an area, you move — and only then do you notice all the things that don’t match the picture.
This time, systematically
Now we are in an intensive research phase for the whole rest of the island. This time, systematically. We are documenting that journey here, conducting interviews with people who have walked our — and probably your — path, and feeding the extract of those conversations into the ratings and features of this platform. That is the thing no AI can give you.
If, while playing with the matcher, you find a shortcut to your dream region and spare yourself the detours we took — then this site has done its job.
What you can hold us to
- We don’t sell property and we don’t take commissions — from anyone.
- Every place gets a “who it’s not for” from us. No exceptions.
- Personal does not mean partial: our story explains why we are building this — the ratings stay neutral.
